Audition & Evaluation

Laughing Matter volunteers carry a combined passion for mprov comedy and volunteer service. No specific professional or performing arts background is required for consideration. Past performance volunteers have included teachers, engineers, students, information technologists, actors, and even an architect. We do, however, value excellence, committment, and compassion on and off the stage.

Prospective volunteers may audition for a place on the chapter’s ensemble in one of two ways: (1) attend a rehearsal by invitation of a rostered Laughing Matter performer (2) attend Laughing Matter's quarterly city-wide audition.

By invitation of a Rostered Performer

Prospective performance volunteers invited to a rehearsal by invitation of a rostered performer may audition for membership on the chapter's ensemble. Auditioners are evaluated on a set of defined criteria. To merit serious consideration, auditioners must demonstrate (ii) facility with the art of improvisational comedy (ii) strong interpersonal skills (iii) genuine commitment to service. In addition, auditioners must attend a minimum of 4 consecutive rehearsals and not miss more than 2 consecutive rehearsals.

City-Wide Laughing Matter Audition

City-wide auditions take place once every quarter throughout the year. These auditions, advertised through the web site, flyers, Meetup.com, and word-of-mouth enable members of the general public to audition for membership on the chapter's ensemble through a formalized audition process. Prospective performers invited to a rehearsal by invitation of a rostered performer are evaluated on a set of defined criteria. To merit serious consideration, auditioners must demonstrate (ii) facility with the art of improvisational comedy (ii) strong interpersonal skills (iii) genuine commitment to service.
